US pressure on Adesina: AfDB warned against compromise

The Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP) has advised the Board of Governors, African Development Bank (AfDB), not to compromise in the probe of AfDB President, Akinwumi Adesina.

NAN reports that Mary Torunana, Chairman, Committee on Banking and Finance, spoke at a news briefing on Friday.

The board has authorised an independent probe of Adesina.

This followed the call by the United States Department of Treasury for a separate investigation after Adesina was cleared by the AfDB ethics committee.

This has been opposed by sitting and former African leaders.

Nigeria former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, warned that forces were trying to “hijack AfDB from Africa”.

Reacting, NYP condemned attempts to impune Adesina’s integrity, despite his “tremendous successes”.

NYP lamented that the US has been successful in infuencing the decision of the Board of Governors to conduct an independent investigation, which is alien to the bank’s practices.

She reminded the board that the “promoters of this independent investigation are not just attempting to frustrate the re-election bid of Dr Adesina but to undermine the independence of Africa, Africans and Africa’s development as a whole”.

The official told them to ensure that the independent probe is “unbiased and not compromised as we are sure that Adesina will be exonerated off all the allegations. The NYP stands against any attempt to impune Dr Adesina’s integrity and his re-election efforts”.

Torunana President Muhammadu Buhari, Obasanjo and other incumbent and former African leaders for backing Adesina.

Sultan Daniju, the Vice Chairman, Humanitarian Committee, NYP, charged youths in Africa to rise in defense of the continent.

He noted that US insistence on further probe despite the ethics committee’s decision “is uncalled for”.

Daniju said America did that “because African leaders sold out over the years; that is why African youths must rise up and understand all these and stand and fight for a united Africa”.
