Cross River Assembly passes 61 resolutions, 7 bills, 17 reports

The Cross River State House of Assembly has passed 61 resolutions, 7 bills and 17 reports in the 9th Legislative Assembly.

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Jonas Eteng Williams, disclosed this on Thursday, at the plenary session of the House to mark the first anniversary of the 9th Assembly.

He said the House Tabled 29 bills and 7 passed, 22 bills pending before committees, 17 motions taken, 8 matters of urgent public importance were considered and 61 resolutions taken as well as 17 reports presented.

His words, “An analysis of the Bill Chart shows that only one Executive Bill was passed by the House while the rest were Private Bills. Moreover, Bills pending before committees are many.

The Speaker regretted that the import of this is that most committees did not live up to expectations. “Let me remind Hon. Members that Committees are the engine room of the Legislature. A House of Assembly can only remain vibrant to the extent which its Committees are active,” he said.

Also speaking, the Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Joseph Bassey, deplored the rising communal crisis in the state and assured that the 9th Assembly is taking holistic measured to quell the crisis.

He said as the country gears up for the democracy day celebrations, insecurity in the country is rising and called on the president to rise to the occasion so as to nip the scourge in the bud.
